Takealot Launches the 4th Annual Heritage Design Challenge to Celebrate South African Heritage and Culture

South Africa’s largest online retailer, Takealot, proudly announces the return of its much-loved Heritage Design Challenge. Now in its fourth year, this unique initiative celebrates the diverse cultures of the nation, offering South Africans the opportunity to showcase their creativity.

Participants are encouraged to use the iconic colours of the South African flag to create designs that express their heritage and personal connection to the country’s rich cultural tapestry. The winning design will be featured on one million Takealot boxes during the December festive season, with the winner receiving a R100,000 Takealot voucher, as well as a R10,000 voucher to donate to a charity of their choice.

Karla Levick, Chief Marketing Officer at Takealot, emphasised the company’s unwavering commitment to celebrating South African culture: “As a proudly South African business, Takealot is passionate about giving back to the people and communities that make our country extraordinary. The Heritage Design Challenge allows us to celebrate the incredible creativity of South Africans. This year, we’re thrilled to welcome a talented group of judges who embody the spirit of inclusivity and cultural diversity.”

The judging panel for 2025’s Heritage Design Challenge boasts an impressive lineup of South African icons, including:

  • Karabo Poppy (returning judge, celebrated graphic designer)
  • Maeshni Naicker (actress, comedian, and radio personality)
  • Zikhona Sodlaka (acclaimed actress)
  • Bryan Habana (Rugby legend)
  • Muzi (DJ, singer-songwriter, and cultural innovator)

Building on its legacy, this year’s challenge introduces a new element to inspire creativity: the renowned travel vlogger Popi Sibiya has joined the Takealot team, journeying across South Africa to discover and showcase the country’s unique cultural expressions. From Giyani in Limpopo to Oudtshoorn in the Western Cape, Popi’s travels have been documented in a special weekly video series, highlighting the heritage and artistry that make South Africa extraordinary. The series will be available on Takealot’s YouTube channel and social media platforms.

The 2024 winner, graphic designer Monja Spies, shared how the competition transformed her career: “Winning the Heritage Design Challenge was life changing. Seeing my design on one million Takealot boxes was a dream come true. It proved that my unique voice as an artist matters. This competition isn’t just about creating art; it’s about using your platform to celebrate our collective heritage and inspire others.”Entries for the 2025 Takealot Heritage Design Challenge are open from 1 September to 24 September (Heritage Day).
