Our Story
We are the Takealot Group. Driven by people, powered by tech. We started with one clear vision: To be the largest most customer-centric online shopping destination in Africa. Today, we are the largest on the continent.
Having acquired takealot.com, Superbalist.com, and Mr D, the Takealot Group has become a market leader in online retail, fashion and homeware and on-demand delivery.
Currently, we’ve got over 6500 employees driving our success, and while we’re a long way from our humble beginnings in a small house in Goodwood, some things haven’t changed. Our customers are still at the heart of everything we do.
Our story kicked off in 2010, following the successful acquisition of Take2, a US-based eCommerce business by Tiger Global Management and Kim Reid.
2014 was a real game changer thanks to a further $100m investment from Tiger Global, which was quickly followed by the purchase of Mr Delivery (later rebranded Mr D).
We now had ownership over our own logistics and soon launched the Mr D Food app. That same year, we went on to acquire Superbalist.com and announced that Kalahari.com and takealot.com would be merging.
Fast-forward to 2018, Naspers increased its investment in the group to 96%, and two of South Africa’s major online retailers, Superbalist.com and Spree, joined forces.
This was just the beginning of becoming the leading online shopping destination in the country - with more fashion, more product categories, and even more choices for more people.
